What is the course about?

On this course we will learn how in twentieth century Brazil, Chile, and Argentina,dictatorial regimes left enduring legacies of human rights abuses, economic turmoil, and social unrest. Examining these regimes reveals patterns of authoritarianism and resistance, highlighting the crucial role of social resistance movements in challenging oppression.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone can be used if you don't have a computer but please note the experience may be less optimal.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

The causes & consequences of dictatorships in the modern era (with particular reference to Brazil, Chile & Argentina)
The rise of Social Resistance Movements
The consequences of resistance.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Evaluate the historical causes of the growth of resistance movements
Assess the significance of resistance movements in the region.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Some basic knowledge of the region would be helpful, but this is not essential. A genuine interest in the topic and a willingness to engage constructively in class debates/discussions are the only real requirements.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Lectures/discussions/group work.

Maisa Edwards

Dr. Maísa Edwards holds a Joint International Relations PhD from King’s College London and the University of São Paulo. Her doctoral research focused on Brazil, the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic and the South Atlantic region. She also has an MSc in Brazil in Global Perspective from King’s College London and a first degree in French and Spanish from University College London. Maísa also has a keen interest in multilingual and multicultural literature and has run the Talk Books With Me (@talk_books_with_me) project since February 2021.
