Do you want to improve your English and learn about London, its history, culture and people at the same time? On this course, you will visit places of interest and learn about the history of these places especially about the different people and cultures who have lived there, and about important events which have shaped the city. You will do your own research and so improve your reading and writing skills as well as your speaking and listening. In addition, you will feel more at home in London and able to participate in its rich and diverse life.

What is the course about?

This course will enable you to learn about London and improve your English at the same time. You will learn about different areas of London and the people and cultures who have lived there. You will also learn about important historical events which have helped to create the city, and you will discuss present-day London and how it is changing. You will also have a chance to talk or write about your own experiences of the city. While doing this you will work on your reading and listening skills as well as improve your language for discussing and giving your opinions and developing your vocabulary. You will learn how to use information from texts and from talks in order to write and speak in a fluent manner about a range of topics.

What will we cover?

• visits to important and interesting areas of London
• the history of these places, their inhabitants and cultures
• the vocabulary to describe places and peoples
• the language used to express opinions and make comments
• the grammar needed to talk about change including verb tenses
• how to research, find and use information
• how to structure a formal piece of writing or speech.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• identify, talk and/or write about key events in London’s history
• describe, talk and/or write about areas of London, the people who live there and their different cultures
• use a range of vocabulary to describe people and places
• use a range of language to give opinions and make comments
• use a range of verb tenses to talk about change and continuity
• research a range of materials and use this information effectively to develop your writing or speech.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is for Level 1-Level 2 i.e. intermediate/upper intermediate students. It is ideal for anyone who can communicate quite well in basic everyday life but who wants to participate in more complex conversations, write better and learn about London life.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment with an emphasis on your discovering how to do and complete tasks, with guidance from the tutor. You will work a lot with other students on different tasks so you are always practising. You will visit places around London.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There should be no additional costs since the places visited will be free. But you should bring a pen, paper and folder to class.
