Discover how to create pastel sketches and finished drawings by experimenting with techniques such as blending and overlaying. Through practical exercises and working from observation, you'll gain insights into suitable supports and subject matter.


What is the course about?

This course will introduce you to drawing with chalk pastels. You will explore some basic techniques giving you an insight into the many possibilities for making pastel sketches and finished drawings. Taking inspiration from artists such as Edgar Degas, Odilon Redon and Joan Eardley and exploring their approaches.

You will receive advice about an appropriate type and level of drawing or painting course for further study.

What will we cover?

- A brief history including the properties and uses of chalk pastels.
- Information about choosing suitable supports for pastels.
- Mark making and drawing techniques used to create different visual effects
- Colour mixing using a variety of techniques.
- Produce a simple pastel painting from observation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Explore a variety of mark making techniques
- Demonstrate how colour mixing works
- Explain the benefits of using a limited palette
- Select suitable subject matter.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This taster course is suitable for beginners and those wanting to brush up on their pastel skills.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions which support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught through practical exercises, some demonstrations, brief individual tutoring and some group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All drawing materials are provided, however if you have your own chalk pastels, pastel pencils or soft pastels please do bring them along.

Mario Lautier Vella Tutor Website

Mario Lautier Vella is a cross-disciplinary, award-winning artist who began his art career at City Lit. After completing a number of short courses in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles, Mario went on to do the two-year City Lit Fine Art course before going back to university to gain his Masters degree. Mario regularly exhibits in the UK and abroad and his work can be found in private collections around the world. Mario has enjoyed teaching at City Lit since 2011.
