This short session offers a hands‑on introduction to the Ancient Greek writing system. You’ll learn the alphabet, discover its sounds, practise writing the letters, and explore a few example words from ancient texts. Along the way, we’ll look at how the Ancient Greek script evolved and how it relates to the Modern Greek alphabet.
What will we cover?
We will learn about the 24letters of the Ancient Greek alphabet, their pronunciation and we will have a go at reading simple words and names in Ancient Greek. We will also give a brief introduction to accents and breathing marks.

Recognise some of letters of the Ancient Greek alphabet
Pronounce the letters with reasonable accuracy
Read basic Ancient Greek words and familiar names
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a complete beginner‑level taster. No prior knowledge of Ancient Greek is required.Knowing Modern Greek will give you an advantage but is not necessary-students from all backgrounds are encouraged to join.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The session will be interactive and practical, combining:
Short tutor explanations
Guided handwriting practice
Reading exercises
Group activities and mini‑challenges
There is no homework, but optional practice sheets will be provided for anyone who wants to keep going after the class.
