What is the course about?
Exploring classic techniques for hand working leather to create structured contemporary fashion accessories.
What will we cover?
- The properties, sourcing and uses of different types of leather
- Hand-stitching techniques for saddle leather
- Surface decoration, including stamping, foiling and the use of colour
- Design for accessories.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Understand different types of leather and their properties.
- Execute twin-needle saddle stitching
- Develop a variety of surface decoration ideas
- Make a simple pattern for a leather accessory in saddle hide.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is open to all. Basic manual dexterity is an advantage.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for
health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use
numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course is taught by demonstration and practice, supported by periods of one to one attention from the tutor.
The emphasis is on experimentation and practical exercises. You may work on your design ideas outside of class
time, but there is no requirement to do so.
