What is the course about?

This practical course is a progression from the Lecoq Technique: An Introduction, it builds essentially and swiftly on from the fundamentals of Lecoq’s Pedagogy and dives deeper into the physical training. With this course we are focussing on character, physical storytelling and engagement, presence and how other art forms can inspire us in theatre making. Using the rich world around us as inspiration and looking at ways of translating this into strong theatre performances.

What will we cover?

In this course we will develop the three pillars of the Lecoq pedagogical journey of training further. The body and Character, The space and the performers engagement, the world around us and how we can translate that into theatrical voices. We’ll do this by working in improvisational settings in small groups and individually, you’ll develop your own character over the course and then perform with this character in a scene you will have developed. We will explore the abstract inspirations and other art forms and observe how they can inspire your theatre making and storytelling. Working primarily with inspiration from movement and the body and learning how radical and rich it is, to create theatre this way.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Become more physically aware of your body in performance, while commanding and holding the space
• Develop improvisational techniques, building confidence and presence in yourself
• Create characters physically that are articulate and nuanced, and play these characters in improvised scenes
• Explore devising techniques and develop your own work with peers in class using the Lecoq training
• Perform in both spoken and non-verbal ways of performance with a rich and thorough engagement in your body.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

An understanding of Acting and familiarity with physical training practices and an awareness and openness of working in an improvisational way is useful.
Experience in Lecoq Techniques and training is desired, preferably Lecoq Technique: An Introduction completed or a similar previous background of physical training held.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There will be solo, partner and group work. The classes build up gradually, starting with a warm up that prepares for and tunes into the theme of each session. This process (for the most part) does not require a ‘copy the teacher’ style of learning, instead you are asked to physically engage with and explore given instructions to find a deeper connection to your body, which in turn will act as a base for communication in pair and small group work.

HEALTH CHECK
You will be asked to participate in rigorous activity. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Wear comfortable appropriate clothing that allows for ease of movement. Similar to something you would wear going to the gym. Absolutely NO jeans/boots. No shoes required, in fact bare foot moving is advised (slip-proof socks are permissible).
As we engage in some contact work with other students it is essential to observe good personal hygiene and wear clean movement clothes to class.
