What is the course about?

This lecture – conducted entirely in Italian – will trace a portrait of Italian photographer Letizia
Battaglia. Battaglia documented the life and crime of the mafia in Sicily over the years, passionately engaging in Palermo’s social and political life. Battaglia’s extraordinary life and courage will emerge through her beautiful, compelling and visually arresting photographic work.

What will we cover?

- Letizia Battaglia biography and the historical, artistic and political background
- Her photographic work and artistic influences
- How to analyse a photograph and a photographic series
- There will be a group discussion in Italian at the end of the session.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of this course students will have gained some knowledge of Letizia Battaglia’s work and extraordinary life story and a better understanding of the political and artistic context she lived in. They will also be better able to discuss photography in Italian.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The seminar will be taught entirely in Italian and students should have an upper-intermediate/advanced knowledge of the language.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a tutor-led lecture followed by a group discussion. Resources used to support learning will include presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.

Ottavia Castellina Tutor Website

Ottavia Castellina is an art historian, photographer and tutor. After gaining a degree in Art History at Turin University she completed an MA in Photography at the London College of Communication. Over the past years she has been teaching Italian, art history and photography both in Italy and in the UK, while her photographic work has been internationally exhibited and published. She currently works as a photography lecturer at Genoa University while organizing workshops and courses in a range of different contexts and institutions.
