What is the course about?
This course allows you to work at your own pace, drawing and painting the nude figure from life. An experienced tutor is on hand to facilitate the pose and art materials and share artist images to inspire. Each student can work independently, supported by workshops and demonstrations including colour-mixing, understanding tone, proportion and measurement and artist contexts for the figure.
What will we cover?
- Drawing and painting from observation of the life model
- Using oil paint
- Using acrylic paint
- Colour mixing
- Working with tone, (i.e. light and dark)
- Proportion and measurement
- Developing personal life and portrait projects.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Represent the figure effectively in painterly terms
- Have an expanded sense of paint handling and technique
- Begin to locate areas of personal interest and your own language and style
- Use drawing effectively to research fully resolved life paintings.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable for people who have attended life drawing classes.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course involves practical demonstrations, slide talks, individual guidance and group discussion.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
All basic materiasl included. We will be working on primed paper, but if students prefer they can bring in their own canvas boards or canvas - advice will be given on the first session.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You may wish to continue investigating the figure with life drawing courses. Alternatively, you could develop a wider approach to painting by doing any of the various painting courses, including the fine art course. If you wish to pursue a higher education route, you could consider the portfolio preparation programme.
