What is the course about?

The course will explore a variety of drawing and painting techniques and processes to develop your confidence in life painting to make a more contemporary response. Alongside traditional skills of how to structure and proportion the human form and how to mix skin tones, you will learn how to construct and compose a contemporary painting, using expression and imagination to produce a personal response.

What will we cover?

The course will explore a variety of techniques such as
Palette arrangement
Colour Mixing
Application of paint,
Textures,
Understanding light and tone
Impasto paint (thick direct paint)
Composition including cropping
Notions of 'identity' in contemporary portraiture.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Successfully compose a life painting
- Mix acrylic paint more successfully
- Improve technical understanding of using acrylic paint
- Identify areas to improve on in your life painting
Make use of strategies employed by a variety of contemporary artists.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for all levels but some experince life drawing would be an adavantage.

- Optional homework will be set
- Group exercises
- Individual practical work
- Most tuition will be one to one tutorials
- Some demos and slide shows / short lectures will be included in the class.

Steve Wright

Steve is a London-based painter and art tutor. He has worked in adult education since 2012, developing a wide range of courses in drawing and painting that balance technical skills with an openness to individual ways of working. He is skilled at finding both strengths and areas to improve in a student’s work and in communicating this in a supportive way to individual learners. Steve studied Painting at Wimbledon School of Art and Newcastle University, completing his MA in 2001. His own painting practice informs his teaching and he likes to share some of his drawings, paintings and working methods with students. Steve’s work is included in several public and private collections and has featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions. www.stevewqrightart.com
