A look at the spectacular rise and fall of Londinium from c. AD 47 to its abandonment in c. AD 457. Includes an introductory lecture, a museum visit and a guided city walk.


What is the course about?

This one-day course looks at the rise and fall of the Roman city of London (Londinium) from its foundation in c AD47
to its abandonment in c AD457.

What will we cover?

The discovery of the material remains of Londinium: the Roman elements surviving in the City Wall, the amphitheatre; and key central archaeological sites. We will look at some of the many fascinating finds from Londinium, and will discuss the development and decline of the town.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Appreciate the topography, development and fall of the Roman city, and recognise some typical archaeological finds from Londinium.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

An enthusiastic interest in our capital’s development is key. A keen eye, an open mind and a desire to question will add to your understanding and enjoyment. The course assumes no prior knowledge of London’s history but you are welcome to undertake any prior reading if you wish.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course begins in the classroom with presentations and short activities including examining range of Roman pottery used in London. This is followed by a visit to the Museum of London and a guided walk around the streets and sites of London.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Stout comfortable (flat) shoes for walking and clothes that can be adapted to suit the ever-changeable English
climate; your topped-up Oyster Card or Travel Pass.

Either the Archaeology of London ( HLW103) term long course starting in January or HLW106 Lost town of Lundenwic: mid-saxon London 600-900 one day (Saturday) course.
