The walks revolve around photographing views along the River Thames, from the Aldwych area eastwards to the City, from London Bridge to the Southbank and from Westminster to the newly developed Nine Elms area. Bring your own camera and comfortable walking shoes as you capture places, spaces, objects and people.

What is the course about?

Meet in the City Lit Gallery in Keeley street for the first class.
This series of walks is designed to introduce you to some of the photographic delights of London.Through guided walks, you will learn about these locations and a range of skills and techniques to photograph them effectively. Some of the walks will require a short tube journey, others are a short walk from City Lit.

What will we cover?

- The basics of night and low light level photography
- Shutter speed settings and motion blur
- Aperture and shutter priority and manual functions.
- Using ambient light sources: natural and artificial.
- Photographic rights and responsibilities when photographing in public spaces.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Choose appropriate lenses for your image
- Control depth of field through aperture settings
- Demonstrate use of shutter speeds for intended effects
- Identify the technical demands of evening and night time photography.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an intermediate course. You will be expected to have a knowledge of the basic manual functions of the camera including aperture, shutter speeds, and ISO or have undertaken a beginner’s course in

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through the walks you will be given information about the area that can inform your photographic decisions. You will be taught using a range of techniques including demonstrations and group and individual assistance.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your camera to the classes and you may wish to bring a notebook and pen. You are welcome to shoot digitally or with film. The feedback from digital capture is instantaneous and is useful for experimentation. There may be short tube journeys so bring an Oyster card.

Michael Harding Tutor Website

Michael Harding was born in Canada, where he studied cinema and photography at Concordia University, Montréal, before moving to the UK. Since then, he has created striking images of architecture, art, people and landscapes for international blue-chip clients for their use in editorial, advertising and corporate applications. Michael’s work has won many industry awards, notably being selected in the Eleventh Association of Photographers Awards and further receiving a Merit Award in the Seventeenth Association of Photographers Awards. His work was selected for a Highly Commended Award in the Deutsche Bauzeitung “Visions in Architecture” European Architectural Photography prize. His work has been exhibited in both the United Kingdom and Canada. Michael has been Chairman, as well as President, of the Association of Photographers (AOP). The AOP is Europe’s most established organisation for professional photographers, working to ensure greater recognition for all professional photographers, as well as working to positively influence legislators in the UK and Europe for the benefit of all photographers.
