This one day film studies course will introduce and explore Sam Peckinpah’s body of work. By analysing a selection of his film work we will discover the visual brilliance and narrative daring he employed to achieve his art.
What will we cover?
The course will cover Peckinpah’s storytelling and directing techniques.
Analyse Peckinpah’s expansive visual style including his use of slow motion to create a stylised naturalistic approach to violence.
Focus on his close working relationship with his stock company of actors.
Examine his use of melancholic nostalgia in relation to his corrupt and honourable heroic characters.

Have a better understanding of the career of Sam Peckinpah and his place in the pantheon of American Cinema. Further develop skills of analysis and interpretation in your own wider film knowledge.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is an introductory course and does not assume previous study or reading. The course is aimed at building American cinema appreciation but is also suitable for all who enjoy viewing and discussing film.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Tutor presentations and screening of extracts from Peckinpah’s films along with textual analysis and general discussion.
