Maths at work series - analysing data at work

Increase your confidence in analysing data at work or in everyday life. This standalone session will look at types of data, analysis of data (both numerical and visual) and drawing conclusions from these.

You will not be using Excel in this session, though you may be interested in joining one of our Excel courses afterwards.


What is the course about?

Analysing data numerically
Creating visual representations of the data
Using the above to draw conclusions and make statements about your data, trends and patterns.

What will we cover?

Averages, range
Graphs, which is appropriate and why
Drawing a graph - what is important
Interpreting results and drawing conclusions.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Choose a suitable average to use with your data.
Interpret what your average is telling you in that context
Interpret what the range is telling you about your data
Choose an appropriate graph, be able to draw it and use it to compare or see trends in your data.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is at level 2
You should be able to understand instructions in English and able to write short sentences.
You should be able to use a basic calculator.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will be in a supportive group setting, which involves pair and small group work. The interactive whiteboard and computers will help your learning. Handouts and worksheets will be provided by the tutor.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a calculator. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Depending on your level of maths, you may like to join one of our Level 1 or 2 Functional Skills courses, or our GCSE maths courses which will start in Sept 2018. Your tutor will discuss this with you and arrange for an assessment to check level.
