Maths for ESOL (Pre-entry)

What is the course about?

On this course you will learn the basic skills and language that will help you to solve Maths word problems. This course will cover mainly the Numbers section and by the end of the course, you will be able to progress to the part 2 which will cover Measures, shapes, and Space. This course will help you to build your confidence in understanding key words that are used regarding maths and what are the operations that you will have to use to solve problems.

What will we cover?

We will cover a wide range of topics such as: numbers, different ways of working out, understanding maths in daily life and how you can improve your reading skills. This class will be focused on the following:
1. How to read, write, order, and compare numbers up to 100.
2. How to recognise different types of numbers such odd and even numbers
3. How to place value of digits in numbers
4. How to add and subtract 2 to 3 digits numbers
5. How to explore and record pattern in sequences
6. To learn about multiplication and division facts
7. To read and write simple fractions.
8. To work out fractional quantities up to 20
9. Extract information from a given list.
10. How to compare objects and events using appropriate language for direct comparison and using common standard units.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

1. Read, write, and count numbers up to 100.
2. Recognise odd and even numbers.
3. Place value of digits in numbers
4. Add and subtract 2 to 3 digits numbers.
5. Explore and record pattern in sequences.
6. Know the multiplication and division facts.
7. Read and write simple fractions.
8. Find fractional quantities up to 20.
9. Extract information from lists.
10. Compare objects and events using appropriate language for direct comparison, using common standard units.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for ESOL learners who need to develop their overall understanding of basic Maths as well as words that are used in Maths. To do this course you will need to be able to do basic a maths task daily.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment with an emphasis on discovering how complete tasks, with guidance from the tutor. You will work on your own and with other students on different tasks, so you are always practising important in-demand life and work skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, prioritising, negotiating, collaborating and independence. You will learn in a step-by-step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually, so you know how to improve and how to work in a way that improves your learning. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a folder to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

When you successfully complete this part of the course, you can progress to the next part. When you are ready, you can move to the part 2 of this course where you will look at Geometry.
