On this course you will learn everything that you need to take your functional skills Level 1 Maths exam. You will develop your mathematical skills and knowledge in working with numbers, measures, shapes and space and Handling data. This course will give you the mathematical skills appropriate to the level, and allow you to apply mathematical thinking to solve simple problems in familiar situations. By the end of the course, you will have an exams to sit which, if you pass, will give you your Functional Skills Level 1 Maths qualification.

What is the course about?

On this course you will learn everything that you need to take your functional skills Level 1 Maths exam. You will develop your mathematical skills and knowledge in working with numbers, measures, shapes and space and Handling data. This course will give you the mathematical skills appropriate to the level, and allow you to apply mathematical thinking to solve simple problems in familiar situations. By the end of the course, you will have an exams to sit which, if you pass, will give you your Functional Skills Level 1 Maths qualification.

What will we cover?

We will cover a wide range of topics such as: numbers, diverse ways of solving word problems, understand maths in daily life and learning to improve your reading skills. During these discussions and topics, we will focus on:
1. Using numbers and the number system – whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
2. Using common measures, shape, and space
3. Handling information and data.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

•1. Pass your functional level 1 Maths exam.
2. Demonstrate your ability in mathematical skills and your ability to apply the above through appropriate reasoning and decision making, to solve realistic problems of increasing complexity.
3. Gain introduction to new areas of life and work so that you are exposed to concepts and problems which, while not of immediate concern, may be of value in later life.
4. Develop an appreciation of the role played by mathematics in the world of work and in life.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is only for learners who do want to do an accredited course. This qualification will help you to prepare further learning or training and has the flexibility to be applied in a variety of contexts including preparing you for employment, supporting you in the workplace or to encourage enthusiasm and develop confidence in learning.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment with an emphasis on completing tasks, with guidance from the tutor. You will work on your own and with other students on different tasks, so you are always practising important in-demand life and work skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, prioritising, negotiating, collaborating and independence. You will learn in a step-by-step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually, so you know how to improve and how to work in a way that improves your learning. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, a notebook, and a folder to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

When you have successfully completed the functional skills level 1 you will be able to progress to the Functional level 2 Maths or any courses that will help you to continue your journey.
