Maths functional skills (level 2)

What is the course about?

This course will prepare you do well on the Level 2 Functional Skills qualification and to develop the maths you need to work and everyday life. You will develop your mathematical skills and knowledge in working with the number system, with measures, with shapes and space and handling information and data. You will learn to recognise and obtain a solution or solutions to a complex problem within and across these areas and make decisions based on your results.

What will we cover?

We will cover a range of topics, including how to
• calculate with fractions, decimals, percentages and use ratios
• apply the Order of Operations rules to all your calculations, including indices
• calculate with common measures across and within the Metric and Imperial systems of measure
• calculate speed and density
• use properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes in calculations, including composite shapes, triangles and circles,
angles and co-ordinates.
• extract, interpret and construct tables, diagrams, charts and graph and recognise patterns and correlation
• calculate and interpret probabilities, including probabilities from group data.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• pass Maths Level 2 Functional Skills exam
• calculate with fractions, decimals, percentages and use ratios confidently
• calculate with common measures and across the Metric and Imperial systems of measure
• use the properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes in calculations, including angles and co-ordinates.
• extract, interpret and construct tables, diagrams, charts and graph and recognise patterns and correlation
• calculate and interpret probabilities, including from group data.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an accredited course. It is only for learners who do want to do a qualification.You need to come to class every week and have the time, means and dedication to work outside the classroom. You need to pass the first part of the course before moving to the accredited part. Those who do not yet have the required skills will be referred to our non-accredited courses
To do this course you need to have a good level of English, at least Level 1. See our ESOL and English provision if you need to work on your language.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment with an emphasis on your discovering how to do and complete tasks, with guidance from the tutor. You will work on your own and with other students on different tasks so you are always practising important in-demand life and work skills such as problem-solving, decision-making, prioritising, negotiating, collaborating and independence. You will learn in a step by step manner so you can complete challenging tasks in enjoyable and relaxing ways. Your tutor will also work with you individually so you know how to improve and how to work in a way that improves your learning. You will need to do work outside the classroom and use Google Classroom to help you.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a pen, ruler, pencil, calculator, lined A4 paper and a folder to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts, access to Google Classroom and links to useful websites to enable you to extend and practice your skills outside class.
