What is the course about?
This course will provide you with an overview of what to expect on the accredited course. You will cover some of the topics on the GCSE syllabus, become more aware of the commitment of attending every week and the time, means and dedication required to work outside the classroom.
What will we cover?
Some of these topics will be covered on this Introductory course
- Geometry and properties of shapes
- Algebra (linear and quadradic)
- Vectors; solving problems using vectors
- Introduction to Trigonometry.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Use algebraic rules to solve equations, both linear and quadratic
Have a good overview of what the Foundation GCSE entails, both in relation to context and to commitment required for success.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This introductory course is at level 2. You need to be working at that level and score well on an initial pre-course assessment before being accepted onto this course . You will also need to be able to show that you have the commitment to attend every week and to work outside the classroom as required to cover the work.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The class will be interactive and dynamic. During the class you will work in pairs, small groups or whole group. Your tutor will also work with you individually. You will need to do regular homework of up to 5 hours a week and focus on areas needing improvement. There will be ongoing assessments. Google Classroom will be used to help you do work outside the class. There will be opportunities to share ideas with others and do problem solving exercises.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You need to bring a lined A4 writing pad, pen and a folder for assignments/handouts. You will need to buy a textbook and an appropriate calculator. Your tutor will give you details of these in the first class. Some basic Maths equipment will be needed e.g. a ruler, a protractor, compasses and pencils. Access to a computer is required as Google Classroom will be used on the course. If you are on a low income you may be able to apply to the Bursary Fund for help with the costs of the course (e.g. fares, books, materials).
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
After successfully completing the introductory course you can enrol on the full GCSE Foundation maths course AC201. If not ready for this you may be offered a place on our Get Ready for GCSE which will help you to succeed in getting onto the full GCSE the following year.
