What is the course about?
This course examines the lives and achievements of some of the most influential people of faith and action in northern Europe during the earlier medieval period. Our studies begin with Patrick and Columba, and conclude with Charlemagne. We consider the cultural, political, and religious environment in which each of our selected subjects lived, aiming as far as possible to envisage or reconstruct their personal lives as well as their public persona, and significant achievements.
What will we cover?
1) Patrick of Ireland
2) Columba for Scotland
3) Clotilde, Queen of the Franks
4) Æthelbald and Offa the Great
5) Charlemagne.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
1) Identify key individuals in Medieval Europe
2) Explain the cultural, political and religious context in which these individuals lived
3) Develop an understanding of their personal lives as well as their public personas and achievements.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Open to anyone with an interest in medieval history. An open mind and willingness to engage, respectfully, in class discussion and debate.
