In this course, you will engage in debates and discussions on a range of contemporary themes and mediums. Designed for advanced speakers of Modern Greek, the course aims to enhance fluency, critical thinking and argumentative skills through engaging and thought-provoking materials drawn from contemporary Greek language and culture.
What will we cover?
The focus will be on discussing and debating contemporary themes using different types of authentic materials. Each week we will explore one of the following:
Newspaper articles on current affairs, opinion and cultural topics.
Blog posts on personal experiences, travel and lifestyle.
Short stories from classic and contemporary Greek literature.
Song lyrics from traditional and modern Greek music.
Poems by influential Greek poets.
Essays presenting analytical and reflective viewpoints.
Interviews with notable Greek figures from public, cultural and social life.
Topics may vary from term to term to reflect current events and emerging themes of interest.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should have studied Modern Greek for 5 or 6/7 years recently or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. This is a continuation of our advanced language course.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays, discussions and debates. A range of resources will be used to support learning, including presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual materials.
Students may be asked to read or listen to materials before class and are encouraged to undertake optional homework to consolidate language and vocabulary.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
This course is based on the tutor's own materials. There are no additional costs. Students may wish to bring materials for note-taking.

With a background in financial and professional services and a PhD in behavioural economics, she brings practical insight into how decisions are made under uncertainty and how systems -from markets to organisations- affect everyday life and work. At City Lit, her courses span topics such as AI and ethics, global capitalism, innovation, sustainability and communication. Across all subjects, she focuses on connecting ideas to practice, encouraging learners to apply what they learn in meaningful and tangible ways. She has a strong interest in global cultures and communication, reflected in her teaching of languages and cultural forms, including Greek dance. She believes learning should open up new ways of thinking about work, culture and how we live — and offer practical value beyond the classroom.
