Spend a day looking at the painterly techniques of monoprinting and translate your own drawings, paintings or
photographs into monoprints using a press as well as printing by hand. This course is suitable for all levels.
There is such a special quality to oil based printmaking inks when used in monoprinting. The monoprint describes a ‘one off’ print, rather than a multiple. However this ‘one off’ image may contain many layers of colour, and the inks produce rich visual effects as they layer and blend.
We will look at additive and reductive mono-printing techniques, using brushes and rollers and explore the use of oil based inks in printing.
- make images directly on a plastic plate
- use additive and reductive techniques to make an image
- print a monoprint by hand
- print from a plastic plate using an etching press
- safely use the equipment in the printroom.
The course is suitable for all levels and is ideal for painters who are interested in developing their personal imagery into print. You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English for both health and safety
purposes and to enable you to follow printmaking procedures. You should be able to take short written notes for your own use and occasionally make simple measurements using a ruler. Basic drawing skills would be an advantage but is not essential.
Demonstrations and personal application of different aspects of the media will be offered.
The course fee covers some basic materials such as inks, acids and white spirit. Please bring sketches, photographs or other source material to work from.
You may wish to sign up to one of the Autumn monotype courses or explore other printmaking processes on a general studio course. Your tutor will advise you.
