What is the course about?

On this course you will explore techniques for Sculpture by making a mould from a small object you have made, inspired from your imagination; or from a ready-made 3D object. You will then cast from your mould, resulting in a fine detailed and accurate replica in the material Jesmonite.

What will we cover?

• Developing creative ideas to make a model or composing with a ready-made object.
• Mould making.
• Using material in sculpture (measuring, mixing and pouring Jesmonite).
• Discussing your creative journey to achieve a small sculpture in Jesmonite - transforming and shaping ideas and objects.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• How to use your new skills with materials and techniques.
• Work from your initial ideas and develop them.
• Gain a good basic knowledge of sculpture making.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

All levels welcome. However, some interest or previous experience in sculpture is useful.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

As a group and individually, from demonstrations, discussion and your own practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All equipment and materials are covered in the price of the course. You may wish to bring in one or two small objects that you could make a mould from, to cast in Jesmonite. These could be an organic shape, for example an apple, or a ready-made object. Please keep the objects to no bigger than the size of a hand.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The City Lit sculpture department offers a range of courses that will allow you to progress from beginner to advanced as well as pick up a range of techniques. You may like to progress onto the year-long City Lit Sculpture course that helps you to build your own individual sculpture practice, or sign up to a short course specialising in a particular approach or skill, such as Carving in wood or stone. We offer everything from working in wire or plaster through to 'experimental sculpture'. Please ask your tutor for advice or browse the City Lit website or prospectus for inspiration.

Valerie Merlo

Valerie Merlo is a sculptor, who specialises in bronze casting. She has an MA in sculpture from the Royal College of Art and teaches at City Lit alongside her art practice. She has a strong interest in drawing, which she uses when working towards her sculpture, which she makes from her studio at ASC studios. Valerie is a very experienced tutor whose personal approach to sculpture feeds into her teaching, by encouraging students to explore the creative boundary between drawing and sculpture. Her focus is on supporting students to develop individual projects from direct observation of the figure, their imagination, exploring and experimenting with materials and from research into the work of other artists; both contemporary and historical art. javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions("ctl00$ctl00$SystemContentPane$ContentPlaceHolderWorkflowActions$LinkButtonFormSubmitted", "", true, "", "", false, true))
