Moving from drawing into painting

Gain an understanding of the creative journey from drawing or sketch to finished painting. Use paint techniques or mixed media, and find out how the two activities contrast yet potentially support each other. Basic materials included.


What is the course about?

To gain an understanding of the possibilities of relating drawing to painting. To find out how the two activities contrast, yet potentially support each other. To experience drawing and painting as related formal language, and to facilitate a progression from drawing to painting.

What will we cover?

We will explore strategies for relating drawing to painting, including: working from observation; exploring abstract mark, gesture and composition; making drawn studies as an aid to preparing for paintings; and also interpreting and developing your own painting and/or that of other artists.

You will be encouraged you to explore and reflect upon how drawing and painting can facilitate the development of a personal creative process.These preparatory studies will lead you to a final piece which can be either a drawing or painting.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Successfully use drawing as a preliminary step towards painting
- Experience drawing as a means of decision-making and problem-solving in a painting
- Understand possible affinities between drawn and painted marks
- Use painting and drawing to explore and interpret your own work and or/ that of others.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

For beginners in painting with some drawing experience, or those who wish to explore the relationship between the two disciplines.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We will engage in a series of structured projects that explore the relationship between drawing and painting. There will be group discussions and evaluations, individual tutorials, and explorations of works by selected artists.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A small notebook for making notes/sketches (no larger than A4) is advised, although not essential.
