Led by industry professional Laura Young (S2k Music), this course is essential for music creators and performers building a career. Topics include self promotion, releasing music, income streams, societies and contracts.


What is the course about?

In this course of 3 meetings, you will explore the business side of the music industry and how to make the industry work for you by consolidating the course content into an action plan tailored to your individual needs.

• DIY direct to fan sales
• Deals
• Copyright
• Income streams
• Collection societies
• Action plans.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Identify your USP, target audience and networking strategies
• Plan for DIY marketing considering social media (in particular YouTube), live performance, radio and press
• Describe ways of turning DIY marketing into direct to fan sales
• Recall key terms for negotiating deals with record / publishing / library companies and managers
• Explain the importance of copyright in the music industry
• Identify key music industry income streams
• Give reasons for joining UK copyright collection societies
• Write and review your action plan.

You need to be able to follow written and verbal instructions in English, engage in class discussions, and take notes.

Laura Young

Since setting up the first-ever van sales vinyl distribution company for indie labels nearly 30 years ago, Laura Young has been an entrepreneur in the music business. From running a recording studio and label imprints, she has moved into music publishing, where her firecely indepedent company S2k Music Ltd represents many legends in the scene as well as up and coming artists, and specialises in indie dance and especially Drum and Bass. S2k Music's publishing administration services include worldwide copyright protection and collection, legal and business affairs advice, as well as PPL performer and rights holder representation. Laura campaigns for music indie rights, is a member of the PRS Dance music committee, the Core Collective indie publisher initiative for multi-territory digital licensing, and the Music Publisher Association's PPC committee. At City Lit, Laura set up the Music Business Skills courses in 2015. She also lectures in entrepreneurship in the music business at the University of Hertfordshire and Point Blank Music School.
