What is the course about?

A high energy, fun dance class suitable for those with previous dance experience. Following a warm-up we will use centre practice and travelling steps to explore a variety of movement leading to a choreographed routine. Music will be from either a West End or Broadway musical.

What will we cover?

A warm up will be used to focus and stretch the body followed with centre practice and travelling steps to explore a variety of movements. A variety of dance styles will be adopted although the main focus will on jazz style. The course will culminate in a choreographed routine.
Choreographic techniques might include musical staging, narrative or character and will be accompanied with music.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Perform practical skills in Musical theatre dance with the appropriate technique, musicality and performance qualities with increased ability.
• Use appropriate vocabulary to identity steps and musical theatre terminology.
• Execute high paced choreography with improved technical and greater intricacy.
• Recognise and utilise greater awareness and understanding of working collaboratively with others
• Demonstrate increased self-confidence through the learning, memorising & performing of choreographed routines.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The is an improvers course. Some experience of dance (jazz/contemporary etc.) is required.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms and syncopations within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The is physical class from beginning to end. The class is tutor led and you will be taught through demonstration and explanation. During the class you will be given an opportunity to demonstrate the work and receive verbal feedback from your tutor. We encourage you to work in your own time to perfect the work but there is no formal requirement to do so.

HEALTH CHECK
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you
could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You
are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement, allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature, and allows your tutor to see your work more clearly.
The exercises are best undertaken in jazz shoes or trainers. If you have long hair, you should tie it back for your own safety and comfort, and you must remove jewellery for health and safety as well as comfort.

Clinton Goldsmith

Clinton trained at Performers College and has worked with artistes such as Blue, The Sugababes, Lionel Ritchie, Geri Halliwell, Robbie Williams, Alexandra Burke, Joss Stone and Kylie Minogue to name but a few….He toured America with Greek artist ‘Anna Vissi’, and in Australia he was one of the four members of pop band ‘Deuce’ ! Clinton has taught all over London at dance colleges including London Studio Centre, Reynolds Performing Arts, Mandy Ellen Performing Arts, Danceworks, Pineapple and Chichester University. Previous creidts include MTV Music Awards, The Brit Awards, T4, Party in The Park, Mobo Awards, Royal Variety Show, BBC’s French and Saunders Special – Mamma Mia, The Lilly Savage Show, Star for a Night, ‘Wetten Das TV show’ in Germany performing the musical ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and numerous times on CD:UK and Top Of The Pops. Most recently he has choreographed for Givenchy, Fendi, Diesel, Wella, Top Shop, Xbox-Dance Central, the launch night of Celebrity Big Brother for Channel 5, ‘Sahara’ concert in Delhi, India and The Skills Show at the Birmingham NEC. Clinton is happy and excited to be teaching and passing on his knowledge here at City Lit.
