What is the course about?

The course will take you onto a journey of discovery through the city of Naples. You will watch videos and clips from movies, comment images, listen to songs and share your opinions and experiences about this beautiful and controversial city which, for centuries, has attracted foreign visitors, and still attracts millions of tourists from around the world.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

A brief introduction of the city's history, a presentation of its customs and traditions, a virtual tour of its main attractions and an overview of its main dishes.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- demonstrate a better knowledge of the city of Naples
- demonstrate an understanding of its customs and traditions
- demonstrate knowledge of the city's lesser known attractions
- demonstrate knowledge of its gastronomic specialities.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The seminar will be taught entirely in Italian. Students should have studied the language for about four or five years or have an equivalent knowledge of the language. If you're unsure, please email Italian@citylit.ac.uk

The course will focus on content knowledge instead of language skills, which means that your level of Italian should be advanced but not necessarily native-like. The course will offer advanced language learners both an opportunity to develop their knowledge about a topic and a chance to expand their vocabulary related to it. For native language speakers, the course will allow them to delve into a topic of their interest.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You may want to bring a notebook and pen. Handouts will be available.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Any level 4 or 5 Italian courses; other Italian seminars or short courses.

Veronica De Felice

Ciao! My name is Veronica De Felice and I come from Southern Italy. I was born in Pompei ("not in the ruins", a joke I always make with my students) and I have always been fond of languages. Indeed, I studied languages at secondary school (English, Spanish, French and Latin) and I graduated at the University of Naples, l'Orientale, with a BA (Hon) in Modern Foreign Languages. I moved to London in 2002 and, after three years, I gained a CLTA qualification at Goldsmith University, and a few years later a level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector. In 2006, I started working as an Italian tutor in various colleges and universities, such as Goldsmith College, the University of Arts, Croydon College, University of Wesminster, City University and City Lit since 2010. At the moment, I am also teaching A level italian at LAE Tottenham, and the IB diploma in an international school in central London. I believe that studying and speaking another language expands your personal and communication skills, and makes you see the world from a different perspective. For me, learning a language is about challenging yourself, getting out of your comfort zone and having fun!
