What is the course about?
On this course you will gain fluency in reading the Gospel of Luke as well as a greater knowledge of the structures of Koine Greek grammar.
What will we cover?
We will continue reading Luke’s Gospel (please check with the tutor through the Classical Languages and
Civilisations Department for the exact point to start at). The course also includes grammar revision.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- read Luke’s Gospel in the original language;
- demonstrate an extended knowledge of the grammatical structure of Koine Greek.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have a good knowledge of the main elements and structures of the Greek grammar. This is not a course for beginners. As it is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group discussions on readings. Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Whole class work; reading and translating original texts, tutor posing questions and answering questions raised by the students. General discussion on language, style, theme, background points etc. Students should if possible prepare a portion of the text before each class. About 20 minutes will be devoted to grammar revision. Homework: 2-3 hours per week.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
- Text: the Gospel of Luke. Recommended edition: either Greek New Testament, ed. by United Bible Societies, or Novum Testamentum Graece, ed. by Nestle and Alland (NA28), Stuttgart: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft (German Bible Society), 2012.
- Exercises for the revision of the grammar will be provided by the tutor. Recommended grammar book of reference (but any other grammar can be used): New Testament Greek: An Introductory Grammar by Eric G. Jay (SPCK) ISBN: 0281028060.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Another New Testament Greek course.
