Oliver Cromwell and Ireland

What is the course about?

We will assess Cromwell’s Irish campaigns and his historical legacy in Ireland and Britain, with reference to Irish politics during the English Civil Wars, the massacres at Wexford and Drogheda, Ireland and forced indentured servitude, and the explansion of the British Empire in the period. We will also consider how Cromwell is portrayed in Irish and British history.

• Cromwell, Protestantism and the 1641 Catholic rebellion
• The Catholic Confederation
• Cromwell’s Irish military campaigns
• The 1649 massacres at Drogheda and Wexford
• Forced indentured servitude, Ireland and the Empire
• Ireland during the Protectorate
• Coming to terms with the past: representations of Oliver Cromwell in Irish and British history.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Evaluate the impact of Cromwell’s military campaigns in Ireland
• Assess the significance of the massacres at Drogheda and Wexford
• Evaluate Cromwell’s impact on Irish politics and society
• Understand Cromwell’s role in C17th imperial expansion
• Assess how Cromwell has been represented in British and Irish history.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory workshop. Some general knowledge of the English Civil War would be useful, but is not essential.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through discussion and debate. A reading list will be available if you would like to develop your knowledge of this topic.
