Owning your song (for singers)

What is the course about?
Exploring individual interpretation and delivery of a song.
What will we cover?
Vocal technique, warm up exercises, vocal registers, breathing. Work with emotional connection and the subtext of the lyric,phrasing, improvisation and interpretation.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
How to practice with a constructive vocal warm up.
Have a concise foundation into song interpretation on a unique and personal level.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
All singers welcome providing you have experience enough to prepare a song you can work with on the course.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Ice breaker games, demonstration and practice, lecture, observation, discussion, feedback, group and solo work, listening.
Song preparation homework will be set on the first session to be completed for session 2.

Bring sheet music for your chosen song. Please stick the sheets together for our accompanist in page order.
Lyrics of your song printed separately on A4 paper.

This short and detailed workshop is a supplement to the range of City Lit singing classes in all musical styles.
Clare Foster is a vocalist, lyricist, composer and educator. Born in England, she has studied and worked in New York, Holland, Canada, England and in many countries in Europe and Asia. She has taught at the City Lit for over twenty years, and has also taught at Morley College, Trinity College of Music and in a Finnish conservatoire. In 2017 Clare trained on a Bangor University course to teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MSBR). She uses many of these techniques in her current classes and has designed a mindfulness course tailored to singers. Her interests lie in how the psyche impacts on the voice. She specialises in Jazz and Brazilian music repertoire and vocal approach and also teaches on a one-to-one basis in London.
