What is the course about?

Broaden your understanding of visual language, and focus on particular areas in painting in more depth. Develop a greater proficiency in the use of acrylic or oil paint, and become familiar with a varied range of techniques and their appropriate applications.

What will we cover?

There will be a variety of exercises and projects aimed at developing your formal painting skills, including your understanding of painting as a medium. You will begin to explore the potential of surface quality and texture in an image, and further develop skills to reflect upon your own work.  Projects are mainly taught in oils, and will vary according to the strengths and interests of each course tutor, however the core content will not differ.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Use formal elements, such as tone, composition and colour effectively.
  • Recognise the effects and potential of surface quality and texture in an image.
  • Apply painting techniques and processes with increased confidence.
  • Reflect on the progress of your work.
  • Begin to identify areas of interest within your work for further development.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an improvers / intermediate level course, not recommended for beginners. You should have some painting experience and it is helpful to have completed 'Painting 1' or 'Introduction to Painting' .

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

  • Practical work in the studio, demonstrations, presentations and handouts.
  • Individual and group tutoring, group discussion.

Painting 1-3: use of acrylics and oils:

Painting 1 - taught using acrylic (with some tutors electing to introduce oils)

Painting 2 - taught using oil (with some acrylic use where project requires)

Painting 3 - taught using oil (with some acrylic use where project requires)

This course is supported by Google Classroom as a Virtual Learning Environment. When you log on you will be able to access course material, presentations, and handouts etc. You can find help via the student help centre on the City Lit website. Please note it is important that you sign up and log in to your course Google classroom prior to the first session. Joining detail will be sent to you via email (check your junk/spam folder).

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials and resources are provided, including paint, basic brushes and paper. Painting 2 is taught in oil paint; tutors may also introduce use of acrylics where projects require. Please wear old clothes.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

From 'Painting 2' you can progress to 'Painting 3' or the wider painting curriculum such as 'Contemporary Painting Studio', 'Ways into Abstract Painting', Ways into Landscape Painting', or 'Painting and Drawing Dialogues'.
