Music Courses & Classes in London and Online

We offer a wide range of piano, singing and instrumental workshops from complete beginners to advanced standard, daytime, evening or weekend. We also offer music theory, music tech, history, choirs, orchestra and jazz ensembles.

Choosing your course

Based in the heart of Covent Garden, we have two Model D Steinway pianos, Yamaha acoustic pianos and two suites of digital pianos. Music students have access to practice rooms for the duration of their course and we use the latest versions of Sibelius, Logic and Max/MSP for our music technology courses.

Expert tutors

Our classes are taught by professional performers and practitioners, many of whom also teach at leading London universities and music conservatoires. We also offer advanced piano masterclasses with visiting performers and professors each year. Please refer to individual course outlines for individual staff biographies.

Studying at City Lit

City Lit students have a proud history of learning an instrument or singing from scratch as well as studying more advanced courses such as music theory exams, and preparing for advanced piano diplomas. Many of our jazz students form ensembles together and we frequently organise concerts and recitals in and around Central London.

  2. Jazz ensemble playing

    If you already play jazz and have substantial understanding of jazz harmony, come and develop your aural, harmonic and rhythmic sense through practical study of jazz standards, improvisation and transcribed solos. While we may not play as a group at this time, you will be set practical tasks and learn useful approaches to develop your playing.This class will meet every 4 weeks.   3. Drumming: advanced

    Our advanced class is a great chance to practise all the essential popular grooves. Enhance and maintain your technique, reading and stamina. Sessions will be delivered online so you will use your own kit. This substantial course runs from September to March.

  4. Music theory: grade 4

    Study more complex musical language including duplets, double-dotted rhythms, alto clef, double sharps/flats, the concept of enharmonic equivalence, and recognising and writing common triads. Learn the technical names for scale degrees, and standard ornaments and instruments. - NB: This course has a break week on 05 June 2022.

  8. Transcribe jazz solos

    A study and sharing group for experienced jazz players with a good working knowledge of harmony and experience of improvising. We will focus on in-depth listening and transcription of recorded examples by well known jazz musicians. Sessions will include demonstration and performance opportunities. Course dates: 24th October, 21st November, 12th December. 16th January 2021, 13th February, 13th March.
