    Tutors:  Karl Lutchmayer
At the beginning of the 19th century the concept of a ‘musical work’ that was created solely by a composer and then performed in a spirit of obeisance appeared to become ubiquitous. However, many musicians, particularly pianists, continued the Baroque tradition of adding to and recreating the score in such a way that they themselves retained what amounted to an authorial role even though they considered themselves to be only interpreters of the work. This course explores this dichotomy, tracing its history, the concepts surrounding it, and the recent resurgence of re-working pianists.
