Explore classical operatic repertoire in this dynamic workshop with an experienced tutor and a professional accompanist. Learn which styles suit your particular voice-type. You must have at least four years' classical vocal tuition and be able to learn new repertoire quickly.

Consolidate your knowledge of music theory topics equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree. The topics in this module are selected from the Trinity Associate (AMusTCL) syllabus. Prepare for this exam, or just develop your knowledge. This term: Exam technique and preparation. A unique and excellent opportunity to gain ‘hands on’ experience in one or more areas of technical theatre production. The course introduces all aspects of mounting a production including stage management, lighting and sound. Following preliminary practical sessions, you will develop your skills while working as part of the student technical team, supporting a full production in our in-house John Lyons Theatre. Suitable for beginners or those with previous experience.

There are some Saturday sessions 10.00–17.30.

Saturday attendance and frequency will depend on the technical role you are allocated. Individual call times may vary but 100% attendance is required whenever you are called. You will need an ability and willingness to have some flexibility.

Join us to explore the history of opera over three enjoyable terms. In this third term we’ll explore Verdi, Wagner and the early 20th century. Break weeks: 01, 06 & 29 May 2023 (Bank holidays).

Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, this choral class will give you something to look forward to on a Monday. We sing many genres from musical theatre to pop plus more traditional pieces. This course is very popular, so booking early is essential. Break week: 20th February 2023.

An introduction to the major building blocks of music. Learn about melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, form and performance directions, and how to recognise these facets within further areas of study. Break weeks: 1 May, 6 May, 29 May 2023.

Explore the art of counterpoint, a musical technique in which two or more melodies are combined to create a highly engaging musical texture. This term will focus on imitative forms including invention, canon and fugue, as well as analysing examples of counterpoint in repertoire from the Baroque period to Twentieth Century. If you play piano at around grade 3 standard, join this friendly workshop to develop your technique and musicianship while building up your repertoire of pieces.

If you play piano at around grade 8 standard, join one of these workshops to develop your playing by studying a wide repertoire, learning to make your own stylistic and interpretive decision under your tutor's guidance. Break week: 21 Feb 2023.

Designed for advanced non-native speakers, and all who have completed 'English Pronunciation' stages 1 and 2. Conversation and the reading aloud of a variety of texts will help to pinpoint those pronunciation worries still to be addressed.

Get to know the music used and commissioned by the Ballet Russes from 1909-1929. This fascinating moment takes us from the 19th century Russian music of Borodin, Rimsky Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, through controversial neo-primitive like the Rite of Spring to the cool neoclassicism of Satie, Milhaud, Poulenc and Stravinsky. Break week: 30 May 2023.

Explore the early music pioneers of the 20th century. Learn about different approaches in each genre and unpick some of the arguments about ‘authenticity’ and ‘historically informed performance’ with instruments and voices. Scheduled break week 30 May 2023.

A lively workshop class for singers with a solid foundation in vocal technique and musicianship: employ your vocal technique in a more flexible and artistic way and deepen your understanding of critical evaluation of singing.

In this last part of the course, we turn to the nationalists of Germany, Russia, Italy, Scandinavia and Spain, and the importance of folk music. And, as the century ends, we come to those composers seeking to break the boundaries of tonality itself. This course has a scheduled break week: 31 May 2023.

If you are already experienced in recorder ensemble playing, join this small, friendly group to look at developing consort playing skills in Renaissance, Baroque and contemporary styles. Break week: 15 Feb 2023.
