What is the course about?
The course aims to provide a lively introduction to different philosophical discussions about love, helping us start to make sense of modern love and enabling us to reflect on life and relationships.
What will we cover?
We will cover the conception of ancient and modern love and some philosophical problems of love, such as how love acts as a valuing activity and whether utilitarianism can make sense of love.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
1. Identify and evaluate conceptions of love in ancient and modern contexts.
2. Identify different cultural elements to understand love
3. Reflect on modern ways of loving.
4. develop self-reflection and self-understanding.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is an introductory course suitable for those who have no previous knowledge or for those who may have a little general knowledge or know about philosophy. You just need to have an open mind and treasure love.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be an interactive lecture with discussion. There will be a google classroom for reading tasks and discussion.
