This course is designed to introduce you to the process of photo-plate lithography; how artists have used this process, its creative potential both in developing images and its material properties when printing on to different surfaces.
What will we cover?
You will be shown ways to generate your imagery, creating hand drawn images that can be developed and manipulated together with photo graphic images to create interesting collages and artworks • Prepare artwork by scanning and manipulating images on the computer using Photoshop. • Learn how to expose artworks onto plates • Develop photo-litho plates • Learn how to ink up the plates and print • Learn how to print on to paper and other surfaces. • The basic principles of multi-plate registration and overprinting different images.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Name the characteristic qualities of the processes
• Make and develop work in Photoshop and print onto acetate • Expose and develop a photo litho plate • Ink up the plates and print successfully • Gained an understanding of how to register and overprint • Operate the Rochat and Littlejohn presses in 310 demonstrating an awareness of H&S issues
• Explore different methods for printing your plates including overprinting, different substrates and paper stencils • Begin to recognise how photo-plate lithography can be used to best suit your purpose.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
All levels are welcome. The course is suitable for complete beginners and more experienced printmakers who want to try out new ideas. You should be able to follow verbal instructions and follow demonstrations. Basic Photoshop skills and a knowledge of digital photography would be beneficial.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Demonstration will be given to enable you to understand the techniques And instructions on how to use the equipment There will be an emphasis on sharing knowledge and experience initially students will be put into pairs to maximise on practical development through discussion. The tutor will facilitate group discussions and work with students one-to-one and in groups Small preparation tasks for Day 2 are desirable as this will maximise your time.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
All basic materials are provided. It is recommended that you bring visual source material i.e. photos, postcards sketchbooks, drawings as inspiration. Ideally you will bring some digital images (text and/or photographic) on a USB Pencils, note pads, permanent markers (Black) apron, bushes varying sizes (House decorating Brushes are good) rubber gloves. You will be provided with paper to print on and some alternative surfaces, however, if you wish to print on additional materials e.g. fabrics, mirrored papers etc. you will be expected to bring your own.

After this course you may want to consider trying other photographic print processes, or perhaps a more general print course, Your tutor can advise.
