What is the course about?

This practical course is designed for those who want to develop core retouching skills using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom using a non-destructive workflow. You will learn how to refine skin, enhance makeup, and adjust colour and tone while maintaining texture and detail. The course focuses on established retouching techniques commonly used in beauty, fashion, and editorial imagery, helping you produce polished, professional results.

What will we cover?

  • Facial and skin retouching
  • Changing hair colour
  • Changing clothing colours
  • Non-destructive retouching of skin and other image elements at the Raw file stage
  • Correctly processing your image in Lightroom before editing it in photoshop

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Retouch skin at the Raw file stage
  • Generate selection masks both in Raw and JPEG files
  • Make adjustments to image colour, texture, tone and contrast
  • Confidently implement the above into your workflow

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introduction to beauty and fashion retouching tools but it is not a beginners course in Photoshop and Lightroom. You will benefit most from the course if you have reasonable experience of Photoshop and/or Lightroom.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a practical workshop. You will be taught with tutor demonstrations with lots of time for practice and individual and group support.

Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in the Photography studio. The course also uses Google Classroom (an online teaching resource) for you to share comments with your class, download course material and upload images (as appropriate) for group crits.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note: PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.)

See note above. You can bring your own computer if it has the latest version of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom pre-installed or have your own account details to log into your Adobe account on City Lit computers).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

City Lit has a vast range of practical and theoretical photography courses including Fashion and Editorial photography, studio lighting and courses in Adobe and Affinity software.
