Course Dates: 29/04/19 - 10/06/19
Time: 13:45 - 17:15
Location: PS - Photography Studio
Tutor: Sara Leigh Lewis

Want to try photography the good old-fashioned way? Spend a fascinating day shooting a roll of black and white film then go on a journey processing it yourself and developing your own monochrome prints in the darkroom.

What is the course about?

This practical course will introduce you to the basics of a film camera, and using film. We will look at the work of classic and contemporary photographers and discuss different approaches to making photographic images. We will spend some time on a photographic treasure hunt with plenty of expert guidance in using your camera. You will then process the film yourself and make contact sheets from which you will chose a series of images to print in the darkroom. You will learn the basics of printing the old fashioned way; enlarging, selecting grades, dodging and burning to bring the best out of your images.

What will we cover?

- Using an analogue (film) camera
- Loading film
- Shutter speed, metering, aperture, ISO
- Processing film, and the chemicals needed
- Making a contact sheet
- The enlarger, photographic paper, focus, grades, dodging and burning, framing.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- load film into a camera
- select aperture and shutter speed and compose a photograph
- load a film into a developing tank and successfully mix chemistry to process it
- make a contact sheet and select images to print
- print a ten by eight inch image with correct grade, focus and tone manipulation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginners course, suitable for those who have an interest in photography and would like to expand on that. Experience of digital cameras and their use would be advantageous but is not a requirement.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a practical course, with small classes allowing for plenty of individual assistance. You will be guided through the process of shooting and printing your own images, with demonstrations and handouts.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring your own working film camera if you have one. Please check the camera battery (if it has one). City Lit has some cameras you may use during the hours of the course. You will be provided with a roll of film, the photographic paper and the processing chemistry.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, City Lit students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount.
