This intensive one-day workshop explores street portraiture in and around Brick Lane and the surrounding East London streets. Through guided shooting sessions, you will focus on photographing people, character, style, and atmosphere while learning how to approach strangers respectfully and confidently.
The course emphasises observation, interaction, composition, and storytelling through portraiture in public spaces.

· Principles of street portraiture and environmental portrait photography · Approaching and interacting with people in public spaces · Building confidence when photographing strangers · Camera settings for fast-moving street situations · Using natural light, colour, and background creatively · Composition and framing for portraits in busy urban environments · Capturing candid moments alongside posed portraits · Ethical considerations and consent in street photography · Creating a cohesive series of portraits that reflect the character of Brick Lane
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable for any level.
You will get more out of the course if you have a basic understanding of: · Shutter speed · Aperture · ISO
...but this is not crucial. If you want to enjoy the day photographing with a point-and-shoot camera or even with your phone, you can still make the most of the tutor’s expert advice on composition, confidence, and portrait-making approaches.

· Short introductory briefing and demonstrations · Guided portrait photography walk around Brick Lane · Practical demonstrations on approaching subjects and working quickly · Tutor-led exploration of nearby streets and markets · One-to-one feedback while shooting · Group review and discussion at the end of the day
The day will involve extended periods of walking and standing.

Michael Harding was born in Canada, where he studied cinema and photography at Concordia University, Montréal, before moving to the UK. Since then, he has created striking images of architecture, art, people and landscapes for international blue-chip clients for their use in editorial, advertising and corporate applications. Michael’s work has won many industry awards, notably being selected in the Eleventh Association of Photographers Awards and further receiving a Merit Award in the Seventeenth Association of Photographers Awards. His work was selected for a Highly Commended Award in the Deutsche Bauzeitung “Visions in Architecture” European Architectural Photography prize. His work has been exhibited in both the United Kingdom and Canada. Michael has been Chairman, as well as President, of the Association of Photographers (AOP). The AOP is Europe’s most established organisation for professional photographers, working to ensure greater recognition for all professional photographers, as well as working to positively influence legislators in the UK and Europe for the benefit of all photographers.
