What is the course about?

In this brand new Summer School class, you will have the opportunity to be coached on a concerto of your choice and work with fellow pianists playing second-piano orchestral reductions. This two-week workshop will offer you the chance to play through a complete concerto or selected movements with your fellow students, with guidance being offered on the intricacies of concerto performance. Whether you're a seasoned concerto performer or new to this exciting genre, all are welcome in this supportive and informative class.

What will we cover?

  • Individual coaching on your chosen concerto or movement
  • Working with orchestral reductions
  • Ensemble skills for two-piano rehearsals
  • Stylistic and interpretative considerations across concerto repertoire
  • Issues of balance, projection, and interaction with an imagined orchestra
  • Performance opportunities within a supportive group environment

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Perform your selected concerto or movement with greater stylistic clarity and technical confidence
  • Collaborate effectively with other pianists in a rehearsal setting
  • Understand how to shape a concerto performance from both soloist and ensemble perspectives
  • Apply new strategies for practice, interpretation, and performance preparation

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for confident intermediate to advanced pianists. You should come the course having prepared a movement (or substantial section) of a concerto. No previous experience of concerto playing is required, but good general musicianship, sight reading ability and secure technique are expected.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching will take place through individual and group coaching in masterclass format, demonstrations, guided practice. Practising your concerto part and familiarising yourself with the orchestral reduction between sessions will be beneficial to make the most of the workshop.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring your chosen concerto score and orchestral reduction you intend to use.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may wish to continue developing your performance skills through advanced piano classes, masterclasses, or chamber music coaching at City Lit.

City Lit offers a wide range of piano classes from beginner to advanced levels. If you are new to City Lit piano classes, please take a moment to read our Piano Department page, which lists our full sequence of piano classes.
