What is the course about?

You will learn how to play in piano ensembles of 4, 6 or 8 hands (at 1 or 2 pianos), playing music in a range of styles. Participants will engage in collaborative playing, developing their ensemble skills while tackling music from across the breadth of the multi-piano repertoire. This course promises to be a fantastic introduction for pianists looking to develop their ensemble, sight-reading and aural skills.

What will we cover?

  • how to play together accurately across multiple pianists and instruments, including changes of tempo, phrasing and articulation
  • how to balance dynamics, changes in dynamics, texture and voice leading
  • negotiating and developing interpretation with 2 or more players

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • perform multi-player piano repertoire with ensemble precision and musical finesse
  • collaborate with other pianists, using effective communication and interpretation skills

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for intermediate to advanced pianists of minimum Grade 6 standard.

If you are already playing with a duo/duet partner, you may wish to join the course to develop your playing together.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Guided rehearsals with the tutor, independent practice to develop rehearsal and collaboration skills, workshop-style playing to the whole class with peer and tutor feedback. You are strongly encouraged to practise your parts individually between classes, and together with your partner(s) if possible. City Lit is currently unable to offer practice facilities, but has two digital pianos in the 2nd floor student lounge where you can rehearse together using headphones (no bookings required). There are also many practice facilities around London with two pianos available for hire. You can find out more about themhere.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

If you have particular repertoire you want to explore, please bring 3 hard copies of this to the first class (one each for you and the other pianist, one for the tutor). Otherwise, suitable repertoire will be chosen for you by the tutor.

For repertoire suggestions, visit IMSLP.org and search under 2 pianos / 4 hands / 6 hands / 8 hands.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
