What is the course about?
Spread across three sessions, this course will aim to address direct musical and technical issues within the piano repertoire and how to tackle such issues. We intend on building healthy, efficient and practical solutions for the challenges encountered and ensure our music-making is always fun, creative and engaged. To consider key aspects of performance and how one takes this into consideration during preparation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Understand some basic principles of healthy and efficient practice.
- Develop a greater awareness and understanding of the score.
- Understand how to be economical in your movement.
- Greater understanding of physical aspects of playing such as ‘release’.
- Engage in creative solutions to solve musical & technical problems.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for intermediate to advanced level pianists. The techniques touched upon during the classes
are applicable to pianists of all levels and all repertoire, but the examples used in the sessions will be targeted
at pianists from grade 6 standard upwards. For advice on whether this course is the right for you, please

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course will take place on Monday 4th, Tuesday 5th and Friday 8th August 2025. The classes will be held
in City Lit's Markson Pianos Recital Room and will be in an interactive lecture format. Students will be expected
to engage and contribute to discussions and will have the opportunity to try out techniques on our concert
grand pianos. You should bring your own music with you to study with the tutor
throughout the sessions..
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Students should bring a notebook and any music presenting technical difficulties that they wish to discuss with the tutor. You should have access to a piano (acoustic or digital) for practice between classes.
