Piano/keyboards: revision for foundation

Boost your piano playing at a pre-grade 1 standard. Improve your reading, hand co-ordination and technique through several carefully chosen short study pieces. A great opportunity to keep learning throughout the summer!


What is the course about?

This is a short consolidation course for pre-grade 1 pianists who have completed foundation-year classes at the City Lit or have been playing piano for about a year. This course will revise theory and practical skills you have learnt so far. It will also help you to gain your confidence in using your knowledge in a practical way by perfecting pieces you have learnt and learning new ones.

What will we cover?

-reading and understanding basic notation (alphabet note-names: A, B, C, D…)
-reading and understanding simple rhythm patterns with a focus on dotted rhythms
-coordinating hands in patterns based on C and G
-simple finger technique
-recognising repeated patterns: e.g. arpeggios, broken chords.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read notation with more confidence
- read rhythm patterns with more confidence
- be able to phrase melodic line
- coordinate hands more fluently.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for pianists who have completed Piano/keyboards Foundation: modules 1, 2 & 3 and/or been playing for at least a year.

The course provides extra practice-pieces covering key topics at foundation level: perfect for growing your confidence before progressing to piano/keyboards 1.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Group work, playing key passages or exercises together
- Private study on digital pianos using headphones (provided)
- Tutor demonstration with question & answer, and discussion sessions
- Practical session with aural and theoretical tasks (clapping rhythms, identifying major/minor sounds by ear)
- Students should practise a minimum of 30 minutes a day between classes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

- Please bring a notebook and pencil.
- Students should have access to a keyboard or piano for practice between classes.
- Music and worksheets will be provided by the tutor.
