What is the course about?

This is a consolidation course for pre-grade 1 pianists who are currently studying (or intending to study) Piano/keyboards 1 classes at City Lit and/or have been playing piano for just over a year. This course will revise the theory and practical skills you have learnt so far. Moving at a fast pace it will also help you to gain confidence in using your knowledge in a practical way by perfecting techniques you have learnt in through study of new pieces and exercises.

What will we cover?

-reading and understanding notation (alphabet note-names: A, B, C, D…) in treble and bass clef
-reading and understanding rhythm patterns with a focus on dotted rhythms
-coordinating hands in patterns based on C and G
-simple finger technique
-recognising repeated patterns: e.g. arpeggios, broken chords.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read notation with more confidence including basic chords and chord patterns
- read rhythm patterns with more confidence
- be able to phrase melodic line

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for pianists who have completed Piano/keyboards Foundation: module 3 and Piano/keyboards1: module 1 and/or been playing for at just over a year.

The course provides extra practice-pieces covering key topics at Level 1: perfect for growing your confidence and offering extra time to consolidate your learning at this level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a group with opportunities to play together, to others and for individual study time (using headphones). You are expected to practice for at least 20 minutes per day.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

- Please bring a notebook and pencil.
- Students should have access to a keyboard or piano for practice between classes.
- Music and worksheets will be provided by the tutor.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
