What is the course about?
This course covers mainly Pilates based exercises that help improve posture, mobility and muscle strength. Many of the standing exercises will have a balance challenging element. Strengthening relevant muscles helps with bone health as well as balance.

What will we cover?
We will cover exercising safely at a level appropriate to you and start each session with a warm up to aid joint mobility. You will learn about good Pilates posture and alignment and how to apply principles of Pilates to increasingly challenging strength and balance exercises. We will also include some simple exercises for home practice home to aid progress.

By the end of this course you should be able to...
Describe how to achieve better standing and seated posture.
Know how to practise some simple exercises at home designed to aid balance.
With guidance, feel confident practising a variety of balance challenging exercises at a level appropriate to you.
With guidance, execute some muscle strengthening exercises with good technique.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable for beginners and also those with some experience who would like to continue to focus on balance challenging exercise. Much of the class will be carried out standing and it is advisable to position yourself on a non-slip Pilates mat close to a wall for support in case needed. Make sure your exercise space is uncluttered. Some strengthening exercises will be carried out on the mat on the floor so you will need to be able to get up and down from the floor unaided.
If you have any uncontrolled or unstable medical conditions please seek advice from your medical practitioner and provide a letter confirming that it is safe for you to participate in an exercise session.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Demonstrations and explanations by the tutor and practical work.
As the term progresses you will be encouraged to do additional practice at home.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Wear clothing you can move comfortably in such as leggings and a T-shirt. A Pilates or yoga mat. Depending on the activity, socks and, on some occasions, non-slip socks might be useful. Please avoid eating one and a half hours prior to exercising.
