What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Ideal for those who have completed our Beginner's photography course or for those who understand ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance and how to change these on your digital SLR, mirrorless or film camera (i.e. not a point-and-shoot camera). You must have manual functions on your camera (i.e. be able to change the aperture and shutter speed settings).
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions in English, demonstrations, handouts and health and safety information. You should be happy using numbers and be able to undertake simple measurements and calculations.

Michael Harding was born in Canada, where he studied cinema and photography at Concordia University, Montréal, before moving to the UK. Since then, he has created striking images of architecture, art, people and landscapes for international blue-chip clients for their use in editorial, advertising and corporate applications. Michael’s work has won many industry awards, notably being selected in the Eleventh Association of Photographers Awards and further receiving a Merit Award in the Seventeenth Association of Photographers Awards. His work was selected for a Highly Commended Award in the Deutsche Bauzeitung “Visions in Architecture” European Architectural Photography prize. His work has been exhibited in both the United Kingdom and Canada. Michael has been Chairman, as well as President, of the Association of Photographers (AOP). The AOP is Europe’s most established organisation for professional photographers, working to ensure greater recognition for all professional photographers, as well as working to positively influence legislators in the UK and Europe for the benefit of all photographers.
Lorenzo Berni is an experienced and versatile photographer based in London. Graduated in product design he owes to his studies a peculiar structural approach in the realisation of his pictures and projects. He has been a professional photographer since 2010 and his photography experience has made him proficient in fashion, commercial, portraiture and interior photography. Throughout his professional career he realised fashion campaigns, editorials and has seen published portraits and interior photography projects Lorenzo is an art history passionate and his photographic mastery comphrend the use of natural and artificial lighting mostly inspired by the use of these by paintings, poetry and old photography masters. Thanks to a consistent photographic knowledge and techniques he is effective in the visual outcome and able to tailor this according to the task and project. Alongside the lighting proficiency he is highly skilled in Capture One, Photoshop and Lightroom. We will look at the work of the master photographers enabling you to gain an understanding of composition, exposure and the use of light, posing your subjects and helping them feel comfortable in front of the camera.</p><p>This is a practical course that will teach you how to photograph people with confidence, sensitivity, and creativity across a range of real-world situations: from the studio portrait to street and documentary photography; or those special moments for the family album. You will learn invaluable skills about light, composition and posing your subject, helping you to produce a beautiful portrait portfolio.</p><ul><li>using camera manual settings to achieve more effective results</li><li>indoor and outdoor lighting</li><li>relaxing your subject and dealing with strangers in the street</li><li>informal portraiture and social photography</li><li>considering how meaning is achieved and what a portrait can say in different contexts</li><li>how composition and editing affect what you are saying</li><li>producing a mini portraiture project in your own time.</li></ul><ul><li>apply appropriate camera settings and lighting choices.</li><li>produce creative and expressive portraits</li><li>create and present a varied selection of photographs of people</li><li>photograph people with greater confidence and communicate with them appropriately.</li></ul><p>Ideal for those who have completed our Beginner's photography course or for those who understand ISO, aperture, shutter speed, white balance and how to change these on your digital SLR, mirrorless or film camera (i.e. not a point-and-shoot camera). You must have manual functions on your camera (i.e. be able to change the aperture and shutter speed settings).</p><p>You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions in English, demonstrations, handouts and health and safety information. You should be happy using numbers and be able to undertake simple measurements and calculations.</p><p>The emphasis is on practical work. We will look at and discuss photographs, reflect on your work and other students’. There will be discussions, group work and individual mini-projects. While demonstrations and illustrated lectures will guide, advise and teach you, you will benefit from a positive group dynamic where you can share your images and ideas in a supportive environment.</p><p>The course also uses Google Classroom (an online teaching resource) for you to share comments with your class, download course material and upload images for group discussion.</p><p>Please bring your own SLR or mirrorless camera as well as a notebook to collect and write ideas.</p><p>If using film, you will need to buy up to five rolls and pay for processing. We do not process the film at City Lit.</p><p>City Lit has a range of digital SLR and mirrorless cameras (Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sony) lenses, tripods and speedlights that you are welcome to try out during the hours of the class. However, we are unfortunately unable to lend equipment between classes.</p><p>City Lit offers a whole range of creative and practical photography courses.
