This course is suitable if you already speak a Romance language such as French, Italian, Romanian or Spanish. It might also be suitable if you would like to learn at a much faster pace.Suitable if you have completed 'Portuguese rapidamente: module 1' or equivalent. Expect more homework than in other courses. Please note your tutor may be Portuguese or Brazilian - check with the Languages department before enrolling if this could affect your choice of course.


What is the course about?

This intensive course carries on from Portuguese rapidamente module 1. It continues beyond the basic aspects of the Portuguese language and will enable you to take part in conversations. The 3 modules of Portuguese Rapidamente cover Portuguese beginners and 2 lower.

What will we cover?

Topics: work, shopping for food, shopping for clothes, physical descriptions, describing personality, at the doctor’s, likes and dislikes
Grammar: indirect pronouns lhe/lhes, adverbs of frequency, the comparative and superlative, recycling the possessive, past tense (perfeito e imperfeito).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-describe your work
-shop for clothes
-shop for food
-describe symptoms at the doctor’s/the pharmacy
-describe someone’s physical appearance and personality
-talk about the past (holidays, the weekend, the past week…)
-describe habits in the past (childhood, routines, etc)
-buy a ticket and ask for info at a train station.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed 'Portuguese rapidamente: module 1' or have an equivalent knowledge of the language.

You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course is based on the tutor's own materials but you might want to purchase a book + CD for home study. Please ask the tutor.

Portuguese rapidamente: module 3. Please enrol as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
