What is the course about?
This course introduces a broad range of ceramic techniques and builds on the skills you have previously learned.
There is great scope for personal development of ideas, whether working independently or on a range of set projects.
These will include throwing, hand-building, decoration and glazing.
What will we cover?
Projects will include:
- Throwing on the potters wheel
- Exploring the potential of clay from wet soft to leather hard
- Working with clay from wet - soft to leather hard
- Investigating both functional and sculptural forms using a variety of hand building techniques
- Exploring the potential of glazes, their surface qualities, application and decoration using oxides
- Surface decoration using coloured slips: painted, printed, paper and wax resist, marbling and feathering.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Use throwing and hand-building skills both in functional and non-functional work
- Make a variety of thrown forms that show the development of throwing skills
- Understand a variety of techniques used in hand building.
- Explore sculptural ideas in clay
- Use a variety of decoration and glazing techniques
- Understand the potential of from and surface from wet - soft to leather hard clay
- Develop a more personal visual language and work with confidence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is ideal for anyone who has minimal or more advanced experience of ceramic techniques.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and
safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Demonstrations, group and individual tuition, slide lectures, handouts and visual information.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There is a charge of £2.50 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £20:00 per bag/ £10:00 per half bag.
Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own. Ensure that you bring
with you a suitable pair of closed shoes, e.g. not open toed sandals. You will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow health and safety guidelines.

Within City Lit you could progress onto the City Lit Ceramics course - VR710, the Ceramics Portfolio Course -VR711, the Diploma Course in Ceramics - VR712, all of which are structured courses that can lead to higher education or independent studio practice.
Mimi, originally from Korea, trained as a potter in Korea and Canada, completed her HND at City Lit and gained her Masters in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art in 2006. She has also been awarded membership of the Royal Society of Sculptors. She makes site specific and project-based work inspired by her interest in exploring ideas surrounding her materials, and their history. She completed artist in residence programs in Canada, Latvia, France, Scotland, Wales, has exhibited internationally and has received arts grants and commission from Korea, England, Wales and other countries. Her work has been exhibited and collected by private individuals, galleries and museums around the world. Mimi has been working as an artist, ceramist and maker for over thirty years. Since graduating she has taught and given public lectures in Universities and Adult Learning Centres as well as privately in her studio. Ceramics is a broad skilled based practice so its important to share knowledge and to learn both individually and as a group. We have so much to learn from each other, both as makers and as creative and critical thinkers.
