This course is aimed at those students who have previously completed a pottery course. It will give you the chance to explore new ways of seeing and developing personal ideas and to broaden your existing knowledge and develop new skills. There will be projects to follow that will enable you to expand your skills in pottery: throwing, hand building, surface decoration and glazing. The more independent advanced students will be encouraged to further develop personal ideas and styles of making.
What will we cover?
We will cover various fundamental techniques for making ceramics: hand building, throwing and surface decoration at an intermediate level.
New skills of glazing and firing will be taught. In addition, we will cover ways of developing and expressing personal ideas throughout the classes. Ideas and skills will be developed through visual research translating this into making your ideas. Alongside this you with be sharing inspiration with fellow students.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
Intermediate Students: - Explore the potential of clay from wet soft to leather hard. - Make work using one of the following techniques: slab building - coiling - press - Sprigging- moulding - casting and throwing - Further develop your existing knowledge of glazes and methods of application - Explore and develop a variety of decorative and textural surfaces on functional or sculptural work. - Give your work a more professional look and improve the quality of finish
More advanced students will be able to: - Set the parameters for their own project - Work independently with the support of a professional tutor.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for intermediate students so you should have some previous experience of ceramics and be open to learning new skills and techniques.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Self-reflection is an important part of art education and practice, you will be encouraged to evaluate and review your own learning, ways of working and progress and be invited into group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through practical demonstration, group and individual tuition, discussions, PowerPoint and hand-outs.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There is a charge of £3.00 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £24:00 per bag/ £12:00 per half bag.
In the final week you will need to pay for materials that you have used during the course, payments to be made by contactless card reader.

Carina Ciscato was born in Sao Paulo Brazil, in 1970. After graduating in Industrial Design in ’92 in Sao Paulo, she was introduced to Studio Pottery in Krefeld Germany where she spent 1 year working in the studio of Marietta Cremer. Upon return to Brazil she became apprentice to Lucia Ramenzoni, one of Sao Paulo’s leading potters. Following her 6 year apprenticeship and a number of courses in the US, Carina starts to show her work in local galleries and through museum shops. In 1999 Carina moved to London where she became an assistant in the studio of Julian Stair and Edmund de Waal. The move from Brazil to the UK and the change in culture and attitudes to ceramics has seen exciting new directions. Since 2003 Carina established her studio in Vanguard Court, South London where she still works to this present day. www.carinaciscato.co.uk

Upon leaving school, Annie gained a place on the foundation course at Suffolk College. Annie went on to study 3D Design Pottery-Ceramics at Bristol Polytechnic obtaining a BA Hons Degree. She also gained an MA in Ceramics at the Royal College of Art London In 1983, Annie set up her studio in London and began teaching in Adult education whilst making work for exhibitions. Annie acquired a wealth of experience teaching all levels and was recently asked why she liked teaching. Annie’s reply: 'It’s an enriching experience and a privilege. I meet students from all walks of life and from many different parts of the world'. Annie encourages students to create highly individual work. Annie has exhibited her work in the UK and internationally. Her work can be seen in the Victoria & Albert Museum and The Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge, amongst others. Annie was recently shortlisted for the Loewe crafts prize award the finalists’ exhibition taking place in Tokyo - Japan. Annie’s work can be seen online: Annie Turner Ceramics.
