The CILS UNO-B1 Cittadinanza is mainly intended for people who require certification of their Italian language skills for Italian citizenship purposes. It is also a good way to test and improve your level of the language. To pass this exam it is very important to prepare in a way that is tailored to the specific exam requirements, so this course will help you to develop specific skills to face the test and gain the CILS qualification.

Due to the nature of the course, a check of the learner’s level will be necessary before they can enrol. Interviews are by appointment only. Please email languages@citylit.ac.uk to arrange an interview.See below for more information on what level is required for learners in order to take this course.

The exam itself will take place in specific accredited venues around the UK. The first exam date after the course will be on 2 December 2021. During the course you’ll be given instructions on how to enroll to the exam.

IMPORTANT: Please note that while this is an online course, with lessons being held on Zoom, the “CILS B1 Cittadinanza” exam will be held in person at the exam venues.

What is the course about?

This course aims to prepare you for the “CILS B1 Cittadinanza” examination and to consolidate and extend your existing Italian skills.
The course focuses on specific skills that you’ll need in order to take and pass the test. We will go through all the sections of the exam and practice them while expanding the vocabulary that is needed for the exam. You will also be expected to do weekly writing tasks and mock exams outside your class time.
Please be aware that speaking, listening and vocabulary are the focus of this course, rather than grammar. Learners are expected to already have a knowledge of some grammar rules upon enrolling into the course. See below for more details.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

The course is organised around themes that may be tested in the Cittadinanza exam, each broken down into the 5 parts of the exam: reading, speaking, writing, listening and use of the language (grammar based). The ten possible themes are: 1) Family 2) City 3) Job 4) School 5) Free time 6) Environment 7) Health 8) Italian language 9) Modern communication 10) Italy in the World.
We will also consolidate the grammar previously learnt for the A2 level.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- A wider vocabulary and knowledge on the topics previously mentioned
- A deeper knowledge of the structure of the exam
- Greater confidence to cope with all sections of the exam.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is aimed at learners who have have studied Italian for about 3 years or who have an equivalent level (City Lit level Italian 3 lower). This means that your level must be at least a full A2 CEFR level. The grammar topics you are expected to have already a minimum knowledge about are the following:
• Gender and number of nouns
• Definite and indefinite articles
• Adjective agreement
• Comparisons and superlatives
• Possessives
• Direct and Indirect pronouns
• Compound prepositions
• Reflexive verbs
• Present tense
• Passato prossimo
• Imperfetto
• Imperative formal and informal
• Present conditional.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course requires students’ active participation through individual, pair and group tasks. In class we will primarily focus on speaking, listening, reading and use of languages while writing skills will be developed mainly through homework.

Students are expected to participate in classroom activities and to do approximately 60 minutes homework per week. Homework will be assigned through Google Classroom assignments or book exercises.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The extra cost is only the purchase of the book “Percorso CILS B1 cittadinanza” by Ornimi Editions. that is down to the student.
Be aware that the course cost does not includes the cost of the exam itself that will be held in person by other institutions outside of City Lit. During the course you’ll be given all the needed information on the matter.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Italian 3 Lower Module 2. If you are taking this course and the exam and already have a B1 level or higher, please speak to your teacher for advice on what your best next options are.

Giacomo Fabbrini

Giacomo Fabbrini is a native Italian speaker. He obtained an acting degree in 2004 at Auroville Rome Academy. He also graduated from Rome University “La Sapienza” with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology in 2007. He moved to London in 2012 where he studied for a CLTA modern languages qualification. Giacomo has over 6 years of experience in teaching Italian to all levels and business. He strongly believes that a language is not only about rules, but also a real journey in history, tradition and Italian culture. He is passionate about technology and apps and enjoys giving his students tools and suggestions on how to use them in language learning.
