Are you considering a career in adult social care? Do you want to find out more about different roles and feel confident in applying for volunteering opportunities? This course will develop your understanding of the responsibilities, values, skills and attitudes needed. It aims to give you an introduction into adult social care and an accredited Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care.

This course is FREE if one of the following applies:

a) You are employed and earn less than £20,572.50 . You need to have lived in the UK or EU for the last 3 years and be a citizen of the UK or a country within the EU. You may also be eligible for this funding in other circumstances. When you come for assessment or enrolment, bring a pay slip dated within 3 months of the course start date, or a current employment contract that shows your gross salary. OR

b) You are either on Jobseekers' Allowance or Employment & Support Allowance (WRAG). Please bring proof of income to your assessment or enrolment. OR

c) You receive other state benefits (including Universal Credit), earn less than £338 a month (individual claims) or £541 a month (household claims) and are doing the course to become employed or move into more sustainable employment.

Description

What is the course about?

This is a Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care course. This course would be good for you if you are interested in, or new to working in adult social care. It is aimed at developing your basic knowledge of the adult social care sector with a view to prepare you for voluntary or paid work in the sector.

What will we cover?

It covers 5 areas in adult social care which are:
Introduction to adult social care
Introduction to the values and principles of adult social care
Developing your awareness of the skills and attitudes needed to work in adult social care
Developing your awareness of communicating in adult social care
Developing your awareness of the roles and responsibilities of the adult social care worker.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Outline what adult social care is
Outline values and principles of adult social care
List skills and attitudes needed to work in adult social care
Outline ways to communication in adult social care
List the types of roles and responsibilities of the adult social care worker.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory Level 1 course.

You should already be able to follow verbal and written instructions, express ideas clearly in writing, through writing lists and short pieces of text, and pick out essential information from a variety of texts (including websites and handouts). You should be prepared to discuss ideas in small groups and take part in a short speaking exercise. There will be some homework that will inlcude some research.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught in a group using discussion, presentation, individual tutorial, computer search, role-play, quizzes and DVD resources. You will undertake a small research project in your own time.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials are supplied for the course. You should bring a folder for your hand outs and a black pen.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can apply for any of our Level 2 courses. You can also look at voluntary roles in care.

I would advise anyone to do the course as I was not working at the time I started the course and then decided to make a career change and get into Social Care and I am so glad to came and done the course as I learned so much and more. The tutor is an amazing tutor who is passionate about what is been taught If you are deciding or debating this course I would say 'Do It' because you will leave feeling like you made the right decision. I'm glad I did and now looking forward to go onto Level 2. Don't think just 'Do It'.
