What is the course about?
Discovering what skills you need to be a presenter and guest expert for shopping TV. This is a practical course set in the City Lit’s TV studio equipped with up to date professional broadcast industry equipment. The tutor, a BBC trained TV director with over 25 years of experience directing mainstream programmes for BBC and ITV, has trained several shopping channel presenters and guest experts for a range of well-known channels.
What will we cover?
Analysis of different shopping channel styles, presenters and performance, how to be the main presenter and guest expert, how to structure the ‘sell’, demo a product without a formal script, talk to time using in-ear monitoring. Do’s and don’ts of shopping channel presenting.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Present confidently to camera
• Demo a product
• Talk to time.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a fast-paced course beginners/general standard. Some experience or knowledge of presenting/performance/working in retail or sales/TV Production would be helpful but is not essential.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently and clearly
• Understand instructions and be able to work to a brief
• Take direction, be adaptive, take notes
• Receive constructive feedback.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
In-class practical exercises will be recorded on camera and played back with helpful constructive comments. There may be some weekly prep such as viewing shopping channels and preparing demos. Reading So You Want to be a TV Presenter published by Nick Hern Books, and The TV Presenter’s Career Handbook published by Focal Press will be very useful, both written by the tutor.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No extra costs. Bring notepad and pen. You may be asked to bring products for your demo.
